ThreeSixty: A Revolutionary Public Spaces Lighting System

Shifting the Focus from Electro-Technical to Pure Electronics

Modularity and customizability are the starting points of this project. Inspired by the concept of creating a unique element that allows for total and constant customization, the design team at TeamTen drew inspiration from a quote by Paola Antonelli, the director of MoMA. Antonelli spoke about how seemingly insignificant objects like the Walkman or iPod can create a personal atmosphere even in chaotic environments, and this idea became the driving force behind the creation of ThreeSixty.

ThreeSixty is a groundbreaking lighting system designed specifically for public spaces. It aims to shift the focus of the lighting world from an "electro-technical" vision to pure electronics. With the advent of LEDs and other wireless units, many leading companies in the lighting field are already moving in this direction. ThreeSixty takes full advantage of the opportunities provided by LED modules, optimizing the possibility of directing light in innovative ways.

One of the key features that sets ThreeSixty apart is its modularity. The system allows for nine different lighting positions, each capable of creating a unique lighting effect. This modularity, combined with the ability to be remotely controlled and work in conjunction with proximity sensors, enables the creation of interactive environments in public spaces. Light settings can be quickly changed to suit the desired atmosphere, making ThreeSixty a versatile and adaptable lighting solution.

The design of ThreeSixty is not only focused on functionality but also on aesthetics. The lighting system is made primarily from die-cast aluminum, consisting of four main elements: the support and attachment for vertical surfaces, the main driver compartment, the rotating system and cable compartment, and the LED module cases. The external main driver and LED modules are essential components that contribute to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the system.

During the development of ThreeSixty, the design team conducted extensive research on lighting techniques and devices used in museum spaces. This research helped them understand the specific lighting needs of different areas within museums and informed their design decisions. The project was developed during a workshop supervised by Francesco Zurlo from Politecnico di Milano and Carlo Magistretti from Poltrona Frau, Cassina, Castaldi Lighting, and Sohba LLC.

ThreeSixty has garnered recognition and accolades for its innovative design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. ThreeSixty's ability to combine technical excellence with aesthetic appeal has made it a standout in the field of lighting design.

With its revolutionary approach to lighting, ThreeSixty is poised to transform public spaces by creating customizable and interactive environments. By shifting the focus from electro-technical to pure electronics, this innovative lighting system opens up new possibilities for designers and architects to create unique and engaging spaces.
